English for Academic Studies (EAS)

 

What Is It?
The Insworld English for Academic Studies (EAS) programme is an intensive integrated programme that allows you to rapidly improve your English in the shortest possible space of time. Equal emphasis is placed on the four key skills of: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The EAS course lasts for a maximum of nine months, divided into three terms. 

 

Who Is It For?

Its main purpose is to prepare you for entry into one of the following Programmes at Insworld:

•    The London Edexcel International Tuition Programme (EITP - Junior Secondary equivalent) for
     12-14 year olds.
•    The London Edexcel IGCSE (‘O’ Level equivalent) programme for students of 14 and above.
•    The London Edexcel GCE ‘A’ Level Programme for student s who have been educated up to
      IGCSE level or equivalent

The programme will also benefit you, if you are preparing preparing to take the IELTS test. IELTS is a commonly accepted measure of English Language proficiency by universities worldwide.

What Will I Study?
In addition to improving your general ability in English after completing the EAS programme you will be able to:

•    Make effective presentations
•    Listen effectively and take accurate notes.
•    Make effective use of subject-specific academic vocabulary.
•    Write essays and assignments in the appropriate academic style
•    Read books, newspaper articles and magazine articles on academic
     subjects effectively.
•    Develop Independent learning strategies.

 

Academic Progression
The harder you study the faster you can progress to the academic programme of your choice. There are weekly tests and an examination at the end of each term. All the EAS tests and examinations at Insworld are designed in a similar format to the IELTS Examination. To progress onto the Edexcel programmes at Insworld, you need to pass the Insworld Progression Test with the following minimum scores:

•    Edexcel International Tuition Programme (EITP) - Equivalent to IELTS 4.0
•    London Edexcel IGCSE Programme- Equivalent to IELTS 4.5
•    London Edexcel GCE ‘A ‘Level Programme - Equivalent to IELTS 5.5

 

How Can I Practice The Language I Have Learnt?
The friendly community at Insworld contains many fluent speakers of English as a first language. English is also widely used in Singapore’s diverse, multi-cultural, community and there will be numerous opportunities to practice what you have learnt.

 

What is the Teaching Like?
You will be taught on an intensive basis with a minimum of twenty class contact hours per week. The EAS programme is headed by Mr. David Forman, who holds a Masters Degree in Teaching English a Foreign Language, and has taught at four different universities in the UK, as well as, at all levels of age and ability in Greece, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. He leads a team of dedicated, experienced teachers who have a successful track record of preparing students to enter their chosen course of study in the shortest possible time. All the teachers are friendly, approachable and supportive of the needs of the individual learner through regular 1-1 consultation sessions.

 

Conducive Learning Environment
You will be taught in modern, well equipped and air-conditioned classrooms with a maximum of 12 students per class. The English Department is equipped with dedicated Multi-Media and Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) equipment. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout and there is a Resource Room for reading and self study. Between classes, students can relax in a spacious, comfortable student lounge area.

 

Entry Requirements
As long as you are at least 12 years old there are no other entry requirements. Classes are divided into three ability levels; Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced. After registering with Insworld, you will take the specially designed Insworld English Language Entry Test. Depending on your score, you can be exempted from the Elementary and Intermediate levels.
